In 2009, Abbott acquired Ibis Biosciences, Inc. The Ibis molecular testing system, a microorganism identification technology, integrates PCR and Mass Spectrometry. This advanced approach is applied by AthoGen to research, testing including product research and development, forensic research, and public health research as well as routine, surveillance and emergency response.
AthoGen, founded by Abbott, is a non-clinical full-service laboratory with new, 7,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facilities located in Irvine, California. We can serve many markets, including university research, the private industrial and commercial sectors, municipalities and government health agencies.
AthoGen is dedicated to sound science. Staffed by a team of commercial laboratory professionals and scientific consultants, the laboratory is equipped with advanced, molecular-based technologies designed to provide fast (typically within 48 hours for rush orders from the time the samples are received), accurate and cost-effective results in the analysis of individual complex samples or high-volume testing needs.
Services initially will focus on applications in biological research, epidemiology, biodefense, food, water, air and environmental testing. In 2010, Abbott expects to expand the service to include testing to support pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, as well as animal health needs.
